The boats

The boats of 2012

In total 3 boats were built in the year preceding to the DONG Energy Solar Challenge 2012:
• An A-class boat which finished as 5th in A-class< br/>
• A T-class boat which finished as 8th in it’s class
• A boat for the Chinese team Liyang Tianmu

The A-class boat

During the DONG Energy Solar Challenge 2012 this boat finished on a respectable 5th place in the final rankings. A higher ranking could have been achieved but couldn’t be realized due to circumstances. This boat has a lot of potential and is seen as a good basis for the upcoming DONG Energy Solar Challenge 2014. Therefore this boat will be optimized and tested extensively for the race in 2014 but also other races next year.

The T-class boat

The T-class boat that was built for the DONG Energy Solar Challenge 2012 finished as 8th and is the first boat of NHL University of Applied Sciences that finished in the T-class. This boat was built in just a few weeks together with installing all eletronical and mechanical components. During the technical inspection prior to the DONG Energy Solar Challenge 2012, this boat hat it’s first trial on the water. Nevertheless this boat and it’s driver performed well during the race.

The Liyang boat

The story about the Liyang boat starts with the sister municipalities Leeuwarden and Liyang. These two municipalities want to collaborate in various areas in which one of these areas is sustainable energy. The DONG Energy Solar Challenge is a perfect example in which the municipality Liyang wants to have a team participating. Because the knowledge about building solar boats is at a lower level in Liyang than in Leeuwarden the decision was made to build a boat for Liyang here. The NHL Knowledge Center for Yachts and companies in Leeuwarden, like MG Electronics, collaborated in building the solar boat for Liyang. NHL Solarboat Racing supported the NHL Knowledge Center for Yachts in the construction of the boat to gain some experience. Several news items, containing photos and information about the progress, have been posted on the website during the construction of this boat. Here you can view an impression of several photos of building the boat while below you can view an impression of the trial run that was made with this boat.
